Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has scheduled a bridge network valued at $237.44 million (AED 872 million) for completion in the second quarter of 2027, linking the islands of Ramhan and Jubail to the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Highway (E12). The timeline reflects the authority’s effort to deliver major infrastructure before the end of the decade.
The undertaking includes seven bridges, three tunnels and an interchange that together occupy more than 166,000 square metres. These structures will span the waterway, providing a continuous link between the two land masses and creating redundancy that will ease future maintenance activities.
Located beside mangroves, the raised roadway will run parallel to existing coastal infrastructure, offering a direct route from the islands to the main highway corridor. This alignment is intended to minimise disruption to the sensitive shoreline while improving vehicular access.
Eng Eisa Mubarak Almazrouei, DMT’s Director General of Infrastructure Development, said the bridges will make both islands easier to reach and will support economic development throughout the emirate.
The central interchange is designed to add road capacity and keep traffic moving smoothly, according to the department’s statement. The design incorporates modern traffic-management systems that can adapt to peak periods and reduce congestion.
Earlier this month, DMT announced a separate 13 km road upgrade in Mussafah that includes new bridges, demonstrating the emirate’s ongoing commitment to expand its transport network. The Mussafah project runs alongside existing industrial corridors, further enhancing freight movement across the region.
Environmental provisions feature energy-efficient LED lighting across the network, aiming to lower electricity use and limit light pollution. The agency also plans to recycle about 90% of construction waste, roughly 2,200 tonnes.
Jubail Island hosts LEAD’s 167-villa RIMAS community, unveiled in September. The new infrastructure will facilitate access to the islands, unlocking new development zones and economic opportunities, as stated by Eng Eisa Mubarak Almazrouei, and the project is part of Abu Dhabi’s evolving transportation network.
