African climate technology company Biochar Industrial has secured $1.5 million in pre-seed funding to expand its carbon removal operations and develop biochar-based climate solutions across Africa.
The investment will support scaling the company’s technology, building operational capacity, and advancing projects focused on removing carbon from the atmosphere through biochar production.
Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced by heating organic biomass, such as agricultural and forestry waste, in a process called pyrolysis. Unlike ordinary biomass, biochar can store carbon for long periods when applied to soil or used in other applications.
Biochar Industrial aims to develop industrial-scale systems that transform waste materials into a valuable climate asset. This approach addresses two key challenges in many African economies: managing large volumes of agricultural waste and creating scalable carbon reduction solutions.
The funding comes amid growing global interest in carbon removal technologies, as businesses and governments seek ways to meet climate targets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Africa’s abundant agricultural resources and biomass waste availability present opportunities for companies in the carbon removal sector.
Biochar production offers not only carbon storage benefits but also economic opportunities through new value chains involving farmers, waste suppliers, technology providers, and local communities. However, scaling the industry requires investment in infrastructure, reliable supply chains, and systems to measure and verify carbon removal outcomes.
Biochar Industrial’s funding highlights increasing investor interest in African climate-tech companies developing solutions with both environmental and commercial potential. The company joins a growing group of startups working to position Africa as a participant in the global carbon removal market while addressing local sustainability challenges.
